Consecrated Lives

by Elbert Hubbard, 1904

#92 of 100

Harry Avery Binding

The book  measures 8 1/2" x 6 7/8" and has 101 pages. The body of the text is McFarland Series, Inland Type Foundry.  The regular edition was bound in  suede or paper over boards and printed on Dickinson paper. A limited edition of 100 were bound in 3/4 leather with a few as depicted above, in full Levant and printed on Japan Vellum.

Note: Harry Avery was among the first of Kinder's students, I've found very little information about his life. His particular forte as a binder was the use of onlays/inlays. Unlike Dick Wolfe in his book on Kinder and Dave Ogle in his forthcoming book on the Roycroft, On a High Shelf, I feel strongly that Avery's bindings are among the very best and most sophisticated produced at the Roycroft Shop. Notice the use of onlays in this binding.
