The Fly Leaf

by Walter Blackburn Harte

The Fly Leaf was first published in December 1895 with the last issue published in April of 1896. In February of 1896 Hubbard proposed to Harte that The Fly Leaf and The Philistine be combined and that Harte work with him as a partner on The Philistine in East Aurora. At some point Hubbard proposed a 3 month trail relationship, which Harte was dubious about, but after further correspondence he agreed to close up shop and move to East Aurora. Hubbard placed Harte's arrival in East Aurora as December 1896 and his departure 13 days later as Jan 1st 1897. It seems that Hubbard did not really want a partner in The Philistine, if he ever did want one and tried to bring Harte on as a salaried employee. However the relationship actually went, it is apparent that this working relationship went much the same as did he business relationship with Harry Tabor who was the actual founder of The Roycroft Press.
