Gray's Elegy

by Thomas Gray, 1903

#69 of 100

The book measures 7 3/4" x 5 3/4" and has 16  pages. The body of the text is in Caslon and was printed on French-folded Boxmoor paper in two colors. The limited edition of 100 shown above is printed on Japan vellum. Interestingly, McKenna states a "few" copies were advertised to have been printed on Japan vellum and bound 3/4 Levant but none of this edition has been found. Apparently, he didn't look in my book case. I attribute this binding to Louis Kinder based upon the tall designs on the spine in the compartments above "A Lyric Poem" and below "Gray's Elegy" having been done with tool #376 from box #19 of Kinders' finishing tools. The rayed stars were most likely made with tool #417 from box #20. The Roycroft Orb appears to be from tool #205 of box #15.
This book was listed in the 1903 catalog and sold for $10.00
