The House of Life

by Gabriel Rossetti, 1899

#37 of 50 illumined by Alta Fattey

The book measures 7 3/4" x 5 3/4" and has 114 pages. The text body is Old Style Antiqua. 925 copies of this book were printed on Roycroft handmade paper and were bound in suede or 3/4 leather. According to McKenna's bibliography twenty five copies were bound in suede and all copies, both the edition of twenty five and the edition of 925, were hand illuminated. There is no difference between either press run with the exception of the limitation statement. I have not seen the edition of 25 in a suede binding but there is an edition of 50 bound in a wallet edged suede binding that is not listed in McKennathat is printed on watermarked Roycroft paper. The watermark is the  W. W. Denslow designed Roycroft cross and orb with W. W. Denslow's seahorse added above the orb. The book was illumined by Alta Fattey who later became Mrs. Elbert Hubbard II or Alta Fattey Hubbard.
