Sesame and Lilies

This book measures  7 3/4" x 4 7/8" and has 142 pages. Text body is Antiqua Old Style and 450 copies were printed in 2 colors on Whatman paper and hand illuminated. The binding is paper over boards with a white Buckram spine. 40 copies had special hand illumination and a few copies were bound in 3/4 and full Levant. The whole edition was numbered and signed by or for Elbert Hubbard in his name. The Reverend Charles C. Albertson was the pastor of the Central Presbyterian Church, Rochester, New York. Additionally the Roycroft published a pamphlet in 1909 where Elbert Hubbard and the Reverend Albertson debated whether Christianity was declining. The pamphlet was entitled "Hubbard-Albertson, Is Christianity Declining? A Debate".
The June 1897 edition of the Philistine announces the preparation of Sesame and Lilies for Christmas delivery. Interestingly the same add lists a Christmas delivery date for The Essays of Elia which was not printed until 1899.
The illumination in this book is very Art Nouveau and is atypical Sesame and Lilies illumination. The illuminator is unknown
