Song of Songs: Which is Solomon's

Cover Illustration by Clara Schlegel

This was the first book of the Roycroft Press. This book measures 9 1/8" x 6" and has 72 pages. The text body is Antiqua Old Style and 600 copies of this book were printed on Ruisdael paper. The binding is paper over boards with a buckram spine. As can be seen in the pictures, two total different papers were used. Additionally, 12 copies were printed on Japan Vellum. Both versions have a two-color title page designed by Bertha Hubbard.
There are ads in the November and December 1895 Philistine which state that 600 copies of this this book will be bound in flexible Japan Vellum and printed on Dickinson paper and sold for $2.00, but there are no known copies of this binding. It further states that 12 copies will be on Japan vellum throughout and they will sell for $5.00.  The January, February and March, 1896 Philistines have the same ad with one exception. This ad states that the edition of 600 will be bound in antique boards, which is how we all know the book to be bound. The April 1896 Philistine moves the price of the regular edition up to $5.00. This book was listed in the 1899 catalog and was again selling for $2.00
