The St. Lawrence Seaway Project

by B. D. Tallamy and T. M. Sedweek, 1940

This book measures 10 3/4" X 7 1/2" and has 129 pages. This book was commissioned by the Niagara Frontier Planning Board for the purpose of promoting the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Seaway construction was ultimately not started until 1954 and was completed in 1959. Upon it's completion the Seaway allowed ocean going vessels with drafts up to 25 feet to traverse the waters between Montreal and Lake Ontario. Previous to this the draft constraints were just 14 ft. This system of  15 locks raise and lower ships 223 feet. Not only did this increase commerce, it additionally led to increased hydro-electric power generation due to the construction of 2 dams and power houses along the International Rapids section.
