Good Men and Great
By Elbert Hubbard, 1908
This large octavo book stands approximately 9" x 7" inches and was printed in three colors. Binding in calf over cloth boards and a leather strap with copper buckle. This is not one of the commonly seen suede books but a rarely seen variant not listed in McKenna. Beautiful interior with Dard Hunter initials. Chapters on George Eliot, Thomas Carlyle, Jonathan Swift, William Wordsworth, Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, Walt Whitman and others. The binding is very similar to a binding executed by Louis Kinder when he was employed by The Dartmouth College Library which is depicted in plate 32 of Richard Wolfe and Paul McKenna's bibliography of Kinder, "Louis Herman Kinder and Fine Bookbinding in America".
